R&B, also known as rhythm & blues, is a style of music that commenced in the 1940s. R&B can be categorized by its hard hitting 808s, catchy hooks, and hip hop inspired rhythms. Singers in this genre of music are known for using melisma (also known as "runs", melisma when a singer sings one syllable while sliding into several different notes).

HIP-HOP


Hip-Hop was birthed in the 1970s in New York City at block parties. The person credited for discovering Hip-Hop goes by the name DJ Kool Herc. Specific components that distinguishes Hip-Hop are rapping, DJing, and sampling music, music created from drum machines.

Pop music, also known as “popular music” formulated in the mid 1950s in the United Kingdom and United States. Pop music encompasses several styles of music such as Latin, Reggae, Hip-Hop, and Dance. One determining factor for Pop music is the length of songs. Pop songs are generally written in a basic short to medium length format. Sometimes, a Pop song will have only one verse and one chorus repeated throughout the song.
