Matching EQ

9/1/2019

Matching EQ is gives one the ability to equalize a mix based on the frequency response of another mix. So what does that mean? Let’s say you have recorded a R&B song and  your Mixing Engineer sent you the first mix. To compare, you check out Mary J Blige’s new single  “Thick of It” and you realize you would love your music to sound similar to “Thick of It”. Using Matching EQ will give you the results you are looking for. There are however, some caveats to Matching EQ.

  • Matching EQ should be used after a mix is completed or while mastering
  • Matching EQ focuses on frequencies versus dynamics
  • Matching EQ should be used moderately
Using Izotope's Matching EQ
I use izotope’s matching eq. Here is a brief description of how to use it.
On izotope’s Matching EQ there is a button titled capture. Capture is similar to taking a screenshot on your smart phone. Here is how you will use the capture button.

  1. Bring both your mix and the song you would like it to sound like (reference mix) into the session
  2. Insert izotope’s eq on both your mix and the reference mix
  3. Switch to the snapshots tab
  4. Select a portion of your mix that includes all or most instrumentation (usually the chorus) click “Start Capture
  5. Play your mix for approximately 10 – 20 seconds or until the frequency analyzer stops adjusting its parameters.
  6. Repeat steps four and five using the reference mix
  7. Name your snapshots and color coordinate them for organization
  8. Next to your mix, select “Match From”
  9. Next to your reference mix, select “Apply To”
  10. (I know what your thinking, this seems backwards, it would make logical sense to “Match From” your reference mix and “Apply To” your mix; but I have double checked and number 7 & 8 are correct)
  11.  Switch to the matching tab
  12. Adjust your amount and smoothing sliders to taste
